Pembroke Apartment

A dark palette in a small apartment is a technical problem before it is an aesthetic one. It must be handled through material, texture, and lighting, or the space reads smaller than it is.

This apartment in Pembroke came to us after purchase, with apertures and flooring already installed by the developer. The client wanted it turned into a high-end home with a dark, moody, masculine interior. Our scope ran from that point onward. It covered resolving multiple issues left over from the construction phase, the full interior design, and every stage through to decor and finishing.

Working within an existing shell set the parameters. Aperture positions and floor finishes were fixed, so the scheme had to be developed around them rather than from a blank plan. The dark palette was built on matte finishes and a range of textures, which keep deep tones from reading as flat and avoid the glare that gloss introduces.

Lighting was planned alongside the material palette from the outset. In a dark interior, it determines how every surface is read and how usable the space is day to day.

The construction phase had left a number of existing issues. These were assessed early and shaped how we approached the works that followed, informing where to intervene and where to design around what was already there.

One room departed from the main scheme: a bedroom for the client’s young daughter, designed in a lighter palette with the same standard of detailing as the rest of the apartment.

All design, specification, procurement, and site coordination was managed in-house. The client was kept informed at each stage without having to manage the process himself, and the apartment was handed over complete.
